Kirsty Burns: TRC Special Edition Class of 2019
Our very own Kirsty Burns, Account Director, has been chosen as a delegate of TRC’s Special Edition class of 2019. The six-month professional development programme is now in its seventh year, having supported 42 women in Scotland’s digital industry grow their knowledge and careers through exceptional training.
The Special Edition class was designed to tackle the under-representation of women at board level in Scotland, giving the alumni the confidence and skills to take the next steps on their career ladder. Kirsty will join the other seven delegates in training sessions on leadership skills, personal branding, goal setting, pitching with confidence, dealing with difficult conversations and work-life balance. They’ll also get to meet some of the most inspiring women in digital at a dedicated business trip in London.
We caught up with Kirsty for a quick Q+A to hear all about how she’s feeling ahead of the programme. Read more below:
What are you most looking forward to about the TRC Special Edition class?
I can’t wait to immerse myself in an environment with more like-minded women, all of which are at the forefront of the digital landscape. The class will be a fantastic way to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn, learn, learn – whether that’s new leadership skills or digital techniques that I can bring back to Dog to help shape my team’s skillset. It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
Why do you feel passionate about the digital industry?
Digital is an ever-evolving industry with absolutely no sign of slowing down. The continual need to keep up-to-date with trends and technology is exciting, and makes every day a new experience. I also feel very blessed to be part of a team of world-class talented specialists, who I get to learn from all the time.
How important is innovation in digital?
It’s paramount to any success in digital! As a digital agency, we need to embrace and drive innovation, be ahead of the curve and deliver for our clients.
If you could give any advice to younger women looking to get into the digital sphere, what would it be?
I’d tell them that there’s always going to be someone better than you – so be kind and humble. Work hard, learn from mistakes and accept failures (you can only grow from them!). Earn your stripes and stop apologising – seriously, stop saying sorry!
Lastly, tell us your favourite thing about Dog?
At Dog, we’re extremely lucky to have an open and inclusive environment – where everybody is not only comfortable being themselves, but are celebrated for it! As the Special Edition class is about empowering women in technology, it only seems topical to also mention the gender split in Dog is around 50/50. I’m proud to be part of an organisation where women make an impact.
