    BRAVE

When the world’s most famous animation company decides its next Oscar winning blockbuster is going to be set in a medieval Scotland then of course Scotland’s national tourist board is going to capitalise on the global publicity. And they turned to Dog to help them do just that. So working in collaboration with both the client’s online team and Disney-Pixar, we created the 'Library of Scotland.'

This interactive site extends the fictional universe of Brave by introducing visitors to the drama, excitement and beauty of the real Scotland. See how we did it.

  • Matching the world’s best animation company.

Just as Disney-Pixar created an emotional, engaging fantasy world, we were tasked with producing an equally engaging and emotional real life experience. Teaming up with our BAFTA award winning friends at Axis Animation we set out to match the quality of both the design and animation of Brave. And through a series of 'ambition workshops' the Library of Scotland was born.

    What to leave out?

Scotland’s diverse landscape, its myths and legends and its spectacular historic buildings gave us many creative opportunities.

Here you see just a tiny few of the storylines locations and styles we explored.

      And what to leave in.

With a country as old and magical as ours you really are spoiled for choice. So the first step was to narrow down the wealth of potential connections we could forge between the fantasy world of Brave and real life experiences in Scotland.

So things that did make it into the interactive library included: the gallery, the map, the view and, as you see here, the fantastical book of beasts.

    • Real life locations.

Ultimately of course all this fantasy had one simple aim – to drive the visitor to real Scottish locations so that they could explore and discover the stories for themselves.

    • From animation to live action.

Part of the interactive experience in the library was an opportunity for the visitor to discover a series of stunning real life films capturing the true majesty of Scotland’s landscapes. Exploring the view from the library window (across a sweeping animated landscape) triggered 5 films each highlighting the unspoilt beauty that has made Scotland a global must see destination.

    • Were VisitScotland Brave?

VisitScotland gave Dog a number of key tasks to achieve with this prestigious and very high profile project. Not simply to build a site that would feel in keeping with the impeccably high standards of the movie Brave or to overcome a number of highly challenging technical issues. Ultimately it was to get results. Here are just a few: visitor numbers exceeded VisitScotland targets; the site achieved over 150,000 competition entries; it recorded 44,600 downloads; Dog ended up with one happy client; and we won praise from Disney-Pixar.
